Case study Riverland Salmon Farm (formerly Amuri Salmon Farm) in North Canterbury, New Zealand is a major supplier to the national market. With harvest production around 90 tonne a year, careful monitoring of conditions on the farm is crucial. One variable is the quantity of water entering the farm from the headrace. If the level falls too low there will be insufficient water for the salmon to subsist. The farm manager contacted EDAC Electronics for a solution and the EDAC 222 dialler was installed to monitor these critical water levels.
How it works The EDAC 222 is connected to a float switch in the water, and an alarm notification is activated when the water level falls below a defined level. The farm manager responds by diverting water within the farm, which prevents water levels from dropping further and killing the salmon. The dialler is reset. Similarly, the system is configured to trigger the appropriate alarm if the water level becomes too high as a result of blockages in the race or flood conditions. In this scenario the manager responds by clearing the blockage or diverting water out of the farm. Again, the dialler is reset.
